Applications
An Application is a workspace for a specific project or team. It groups selected devices and device endpoints with its own dashboards, alerts, maps, tags, and access settings.
Quick Start
Use these steps to create an application and give its users access.
-
1Open Applications from the main navigation.2Select +, enter the application details, choose its sidebar sections, and assign device endpoints or devices.3Select an application row to open its first available sidebar section.4If you have permission, add users and assign their roles from Administrator > User management inside the application.
What an Application Scopes
When you open an application, its assignments and settings determine what you can see and manage.
Area What is in the application Devices and device endpoints The assigned endpoints and devices. The Default Application is the exception: it includes all account devices and endpoints. Dashboards Dashboards created in the application. A default dashboard is created when the Dashboard section is enabled. Alerts The application’s alerts, notification groups, and alert history. Map The application’s map and its located devices. Systems and tags Systems and tags created for the application. Endpoint assignments include their devices. Assigning a device endpoint adds all of its current devices and automatically includes devices added to that endpoint later. You can also assign individual devices from other endpoints. The same device can belong to more than one application. The Applications List
Open Applications from the main navigation to find, enter, and manage the applications you can access.
Select a row to enter that application. Columns
Column Shows Name The application name. Description The optional application description. Devices The number of assigned devices. The Default Application shows All devices. Users The number of application members. This column appears only if you can edit or delete applications. The Default Application shows Manager only; see the access note below. Device EndPoints Up to two assigned endpoint names. If there are more, point to the overflow badge to see them. Select an endpoint name to open its details. This information appears only if you can view device endpoints. Created The date the application was created. Actions Edit and Delete, when you have the corresponding permissions. Searching and ordering
-
1Search filters application names and descriptions as you type.
- 2The Default Application remains first. Other applications initially appear newest first.
- 3Select the Name, Devices, Users, or Created header to change the order.
Switching scope
Select an application row to open its first enabled section. Account owners, account administrators, users who can manage applications, and users assigned an application role can enter it. When the link is available, select the application sidebar header to return to the list and choose another application.
The Default Application
Every account starts with a Default Application for account-wide monitoring.
The Default Application remains at the top of the list. The Default Application is created with the account and includes its own default dashboard. Its initial description says it is only accessible by managers, but access is determined by the current permission rules described below.
Behavior Detail Account-wide scope All account devices and device endpoints are included, including devices added later. Access Account owners, account administrators, users who can manage applications, and users assigned a role for the Default Application can enter it. The Manager only table label does not list every permitted user. Fixed assignments You cannot add or remove its device endpoints or devices. Editable settings You can change its name, description, and sidebar sections. The Default Application can be deleted. If you have application delete permission, the interface currently allows you to delete it. Deletion cannot be undone, so keep it unless you intend to remove its application content.Creating an Application
If you have application-create permission, select + to open the three-step creation wizard.
Step 1: details
Enter the application’s name and description. -
1Enter an Application name.
-
2Optionally enter a Description.
Step 2: template
Choose the sections available in the application. A template selects a starting set of sidebar sections. Smart Environment is selected initially. Changing any section manually changes the template selection to Custom.
Template Enabled sections Smart Environment Dashboard, Analytics, Map, Devices, and Alerts Default Dashboard, Devices, and Alerts Custom Devices initially, with any other sections you select A section that is not enabled is unavailable in that application. Opening its URL redirects you to the first available section.Step 3: devices
Assign device endpoints and individual devices. -
1Under Assign device endpoints, select any endpoints whose devices should be included. This includes their current and future devices.2Under Assign devices, select any additional devices from other endpoints. Devices already included through a selected endpoint are omitted from this picker.3Check the device total, then select Create.
The endpoint and device controls appear only for resources you can view. Add users after creation from the application’s User management page.
Inside an Application
The application sidebar shows the enabled sections that your permissions allow you to use.
The available navigation depends on the application settings and your permissions. - Analytics, Map, and Dashboards open their corresponding views.
- Devices may include device lists, Device Endpoints, Integrations, Systems, and Tags.
- Alerts may include View Alerts, Alert History, and Notification Groups.
- Administrator appears for users who can access application user management.
- You can collapse the sidebar. The browser remembers your choice.
Editing, Reorganizing, and Deleting
Edit and Delete both start from the Actions column of the Applications list. You reassign device endpoints and devices inside the Edit wizard.
Edit
Edit uses the same three steps as application creation. If you have application-edit permission, select Edit in the row’s Actions column. You can change the name, description, sidebar sections, device endpoints, and devices, then save the changes.
Reassigning devices and endpoints
- Removing an endpoint removes that assignment from the application. Assign any device that must remain individually or through another selected endpoint before saving.
- Removing an endpoint or device from an application does not delete it from the account or stop its data ingestion.
Delete
Deletion requires confirmation and cannot be undone. If you have application-delete permission, select Delete and confirm. This removes the application and its dashboards, widgets, maps, Systems, alerts, notification groups, and tags. It does not delete the underlying devices or device endpoints from the account.
Roles and Permissions
An application role controls a user’s access within one application. It is separate from the user’s account role.
Assign each member a role for this application. Available roles come from the account’s application-role configuration. Common labels and access patterns are shown below, but your roles may differ.
Common application role Typical access Admin / Manager Full application access, including member and role management. Operator Application access without member and role management. Viewer Read-only application access. - A user can have a different application role in each application.
- Account owners, account administrators, and users with the account-level manage-applications permission can access every application without a separate application role.
- From Administrator > User management, permitted users can add an existing account user and assign a role. Users who can create account users can also invite someone new.
See the Administration documentation for account roles, application roles, and permission management.Limits and Good to Know
These rules apply when you name an application and choose which sidebar sections it shows.
- Application names are required, must be unique within the account, and can contain up to 100 characters. Descriptions can contain up to 500 characters.
- Enabling a sidebar section does not grant access to it. A user must also have the required permissions.
